About the Project

Lee County has begun improvements at the intersection of Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road. This project will enhance traffic flow and safety at this intersection, which features two (2) lane undivided arterial roadways. The improvements include the reconstruction of the intersection into a single-lane roundabout, designed to facilitate smoother vehicle movement while reducing congestion. Additionally, the project will incorporate pedestrian facilities to ensure safe crossing options for foot traffic, along with improved lighting to enhance visibility during nighttime hours. Landscaping efforts will be included to beautify the area, and comprehensive drainage and stormwater treatment systems will be implemented to manage runoff effectively and protect local water quality. Work is expected to occur during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; however, some night and weekend work may be necessary. This project is expected to be completed Spring 2026.

constructio update - june 2025

The Lee County Department of Transportation is pleased to announce crews are entering the second phase of construction for the Buckingham and Gunnery roads roundabout and is urging motorists to use caution as traffic patterns change.
Buckingham Road will be closed from Gunnery Road to Sunset Road beginning June 16. This means:

  • Southbound Buckingham Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to Gunnery Road, then turn right at Sunset Road, then left back onto Buckingham Road to continue south.
  • Northbound Buckingham Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to turn right onto Sunset Road, then left onto Gunnery Road, to continue onto Buckingham Road north.
  • Traffic traveling north on Gunnery Road to access Buckingham Road south, should turn left on Sunset Road prior to the Gunnery Road and Buckingham Road intersection
Additionally, temporary traffic signals will be installed at two intersections:
  • Buckingham Road and Sunset Road
  • Gunnery Road and Sunset Road
Sidewalks will remain closed during this phase. Work is expected to occur during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; however, some night and weekend work may be necessary. This project is expected to be completed during Spring 2026.

Lee County Commissioners awarded a $4.8 million contract to V & H Construction, Inc. to construct the new roundabout. The project is partially funded with almost $4.6 million in federal funding.

What to expect during construction

This project is expected to be constructed in four phases.

First Phase: This phase involved the installation of temporary paving and new drainage along Gunnery Road, which included the closure of sidewalks. First Phase was completed May 2025.

Second Phase: Currently working in the second phase, Buckingham Road will be closed from Gunnery Road to Sunset Road.

  • Southbound Buckingham Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to Gunnery Road then turn right at Sunset Road then left back onto Buckingham Road to continue south.
  • Northbound Buckingham Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to turn right onto Sunset Road, then left onto Gunnery Road to continue north onto Buckingham Road north.
  • Additionally, temporary traffic signals will be installed at both the intersections of Buckingham Road and Sunset Road, as well as Gunnery Road and Sunset Road.
  • Sidewalks will remain closed during this phase. Second Phase is anticipated to be completed Fall 2025.

Third Phase: In the third phase, Gunnery Road will be closed from Buckingham Road to just before Sunset Road. Similar to the previous phase, a detour will guide traffic from Buckingham Road to Sunset Road and then back onto Gunnery Road. Access to Gunnery Baptist Church on Gunnery Road will remain in all phases. Temporary traffic signals will remain in place. Sidewalk closures will continue throughout this phase. The Third Phase is scheduled to begin Fall 2025 and anticipated to be completed by Winter 2026.

Fourth Phase: In this final phase, traffic will be in the new configuration, utilizing the roundabout for all traffic movements. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures while crews complete the remaining portions of the roundabout. The Fourth Phase is scheduled to begin by Winter 2026 and anticipated to be completed by Spring 2026.

about roundabouts

Roundabouts offer operational advantages compared with traditional intersections, including reduced delays, lower maintenance costs, adequate capacity for varying traffic, longer lifespan and fewer severe crashes. Vehicles yield rather than stop, which keeps traffic moving, especially during off -peak hours, which enables continuous traffic flow in all directions, allowing motorists to navigate without stopping, this results in fewer delays, opposed to signal cycles or red lights of a traditional signalized intersection.

Why Roundabouts Make Sense

Improve Safety

  • More than 90% reduction in fatalities
  • 76% reduction in injuries
  • 35% reduction in all crashes
  • Slower speeds are generally safer for pedestrians

Reduces Congestion

  • Efficient during both peak hours and other times
  • Typically less delay

Reduces Emissions and Fuel Consumption

  • Fewer stops and hard accelerations, less time idling

Save Money

  • No signal equipment to install, power, and maintain

Improves the Area’s Look

  • Signal wires, poles and ground equipment are eliminated
  • Center of roundabout used for landscaping
