About the Project

The Lee County Department of Transportation is pleased to announce that the new roundabout at the intersection of Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road is now open to the public. Improvement at the Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road intersection, converting the two-lane undivided roadways into a single-lane roundabout to improve traffic flow and safety. The project also added pedestrian crossings, enhanced lighting, landscaping, and upgraded drainage and stormwater systems to better manage runoff and protect water quality.

This milestone marks the completion of the final phase of a multi-stage construction project designed to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and reduce congestion in the area. Motorists may now travel through the intersection using the new roundabout configuration.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution as they adjust to the new traffic pattern and to follow all posted signage and pavement markings when navigating the roundabout. Please remember to yield to vehicles already in the circle and choose the appropriate lane before entering.

We appreciate the community’s patience throughout construction, including detours, temporary traffic signals, and roadway closures that were necessary to safely complete this project.

While the roundabout is now open, crews may still be present in the area completing minor final work. Motorists should remain attentive and prepared for occasional lane adjustments or brief delays.

Construction was completed in Spring 2026. The $4.8 million project was awarded to V & H Construction, Inc., with approximately $4.6 million funded through federal sources.

Thank you for your cooperation and support as we continue working to improve our transportation network.

construction complete - roundabout open

The Lee County Department of Transportation is pleased to announce crews are entering the third phase of construction for the Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road roundabout project, which will be constructed in two stages. Motorists should use caution and expect traffic pattern changes.

Phase III STAGE 1
During Stage 1, Gunnery Road will be reduced to one lane for northbound traffic only between Sunset Road and Buckingham Road beginning late October 2025. Southbound Gunnery Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to Buckingham Road then turn left at Sunset Road, then right back onto Gunnery Road to continue south.

PHASE III STAGE 2
During Stage 2, Gunnery Road will be closed from Buckingham Road to just north of Sunset Road beginning late October/early November 2025. This means:

  • Southbound Gunnery Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to Buckingham Road then turn left at Sunset Road then right back onto Gunnery Road to continue south.
  • Northbound Gunnery Road traffic will be redirected via a detour to turn left onto Sunset Road, then right onto Buckingham Road to continue onto Buckingham Road north.
Additionally, temporary traffic signals will be installed at two intersections:
  • Buckingham Road and Sunset Road
  • Gunnery Road and Sunset Road
Sidewalks will remain closed during this phase. Work is expected to occur during weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; however, some night and weekend work may be necessary. This project is expected to be completed during Spring 2026.

Lee County Commissioners awarded a $4.8 million contract to V & H Construction, Inc. to construct the new roundabout. The project is partially funded with almost $4.6 million in federal funding.

Phase III – Stage 2

construction is complete - roundabout open

This project was constructed in four phases.

First Phase: This phase involved the installation of temporary paving and new drainage along Gunnery Road, which included the closure of sidewalks. First Phase was completed May 2025.

Second Phase: This phase involved the construction of the west side of the roundabout and installation of new drainage along Buckingham Road. Second Phase was completed Fall 2025.

Third Phase: This phase, involved the construction of the east side of the roundabout. The Third Phase was completed Spring 2026.

Fourth Phase: In this final phase, traffic will be in the new configuration, utilizing the roundabout for all traffic movements.  The Fourth Phase was completed Spring 2026.

about roundabouts

Roundabouts offer operational advantages compared with traditional intersections, including reduced delays, lower maintenance costs, adequate capacity for varying traffic, longer lifespan and fewer severe crashes. Vehicles yield rather than stop, which keeps traffic moving, especially during off -peak hours, which enables continuous traffic flow in all directions, allowing motorists to navigate without stopping, this results in fewer delays, opposed to signal cycles or red lights of a traditional signalized intersection.

Why Roundabouts Make Sense

Improve Safety

  • More than 90% reduction in fatalities
  • 76% reduction in injuries
  • 35% reduction in all crashes
  • Slower speeds are generally safer for pedestrians

Reduces Congestion

  • Efficient during both peak hours and other times
  • Typically less delay

Reduces Emissions and Fuel Consumption

  • Fewer stops and hard accelerations, less time idling

Save Money

  • No signal equipment to install, power, and maintain

Improves the Area’s Look

  • Signal wires, poles and ground equipment are eliminated
  • Center of roundabout used for landscaping
