About the Project

In 2017, the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization completed a study on various intersections across the county to determine if roundabouts could improve safety and traffic flow. The roundabout at Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road intersection was approved as one of the top five sites in the county.

The proposed roundabout at the Buckingham Road and Gunnery Road intersection will provide excellent operations, improve safety by reducing serious injury and fatal crashes, and provide better pedestrian accommodations, and crosswalk features.

The roundabout will slow down all vehicles, address the awkward geometric configuration caused by the acute angle of the intersection, and provide opportunities to enhance intersection aesthetics. The design will include roundabout design optimization that will investigate different sizes, shapes, locations, and alignment of approaches to determine the best option for this challenging location.

Design is complete on the roundabout at Buckingham Road/Gunnery Road intersection. Construction will begin early 2025 and take approximately one year to complete. Motorists can expect lane closures and traffic shifts during the construction process. Please use caution while travelling through the construction zone as large vehicles will be working in close proximity to the travel lanes.
